![]() I mean, I’m neither here nor there one way or the other (onthat). In some cases,in some of the cities, they’re opting to not even bother having themovie. And for the most part, Ithink there will be as much band as there is movie. “It’s not likepeople are just coming to see the movie. “We’re going to play a full set,” Kudlow said. At many shows, the film “Anvil! TheStory of Anvil” will be shown, followed by a live performance bythe band, which also includes bassist Glenn Five. Now Anvil is starting its biggest American tour - and firstextended run of stateside dates since 1998 - on what is billedas “The Anvil Experience” tour. ![]() ![]() Anvil also got to play the middle slot onseveral of AC/DC’s outdoor stadium concerts last year. Last year, the group released a new version of “This IsThirteen,” rerecorded with high-profile producer Chris Tsangarides(who ironically produced two of Anvil’s early albums before he wenton to gain fame as producer for Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, JudasPriest and Depeche Mode). The filmcrew followed the band on a tour of Europe that was anything butglamorous - the band traveled by camper bus, and its shows wereanything but successes at times - as well as documenting themaking of the group’s self-released 2007 CD, “This Is Thirteen.”Both touching and funny, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” became acritically acclaimed hit that introduced legions of fans to theband and has given Anvil a new lease on its musical life. The movie that Gervasi made didn’t dwell on the group’shard-fought, up-and-down history, but instead wove some of the backstory into a film that focused on the present-day Anvil. It’s not a guy who goes along with a band on tour and takeshome movies. The guy actuallyknows the makings of how to make a dramatic, incredible, impactfulmovie. Kudlow said he knew right away that the project would be agame-changer. After writing “TheTerminal,” among other projects, the one-time Anvil roadiecontacted the group with his idea to do a movie about the band. The ongoing cycle of releasing albums (mainly in Canada) andtouring to small audiences would undoubtedly have continueduninterrupted had it not been for Gervasi. you know whatthe consequences of that are.” So insticking to what we love, which is what we did. Making it by doingsomething that comes unnatural and something that you don’t want todo, then how gratifying is that? You’re in a band that you’remiserable with the music you’re playing. “When you’re doing exactly what’sin your heart and what you want to do, then you’re going to havethe most gratification at the end of the day. “I think we’ve done everything exactly the way I wanted it, theway I wanted to do it,” he said. And Kudlow said the band made a decision to stay true toits underground metal roots rather than try to craft a sound thatwas suited to a mass audience. And we were left stranded without a recorddeal for four years, the most important four years of metalhistory.”Īfter that opportunity escaped, Anvil simply marched on asbefore. He pulled us out of the Canadian record deal andattempted to get the old albums released in the United States, which he couldn’t do. We were signed to a Canadian independent label, and then wegot so much interest from the United States it came to the pointwhere Aerosmith’s manager got in touch with us and decided tohandle the band. “What had happened was, we were really close to breakingthrough,” he said. He noted that the group in 1983 had a shot at much biggerthings. Kudlow expressed no regrets or bitterness about Anvil’s careerpath. ButAnvil has labored mostly in obscurity, releasing 13 albums anddoing countless tours of Canada, the United States and othercountries. The band did gain somenotable fans, including Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, who hastouted Anvil as an early influence on his hugely popular band. ![]() When the tour ended, Gervasi and Anvil went on with theirseparate lives.įor Anvil, it turned out to be a long and steady slog as aclub-level band that gained a cult-level following that neverspread much beyond devout metal fans. Impressed by the young fan’s enthusiasm, Anvil’s membersbefriended Gervasi and took him out on a Canadian summer tour as aroadie. Formed in the early 1970s by Kudlow and Reiner, theband started releasing albums in 1981 and met Gervasi about a yearlater. Anvil was just getting started as a touring and recording act atthat point.
